All of the shellacs are 3 coats of 2# cuts. The BLO and Watco were flooded on, then wiped off after letting sit for 15 minutes or so. The Waterlox and Sherwin Williams Fast Dry are both 3 coats. Jeff Jewitt has a nice shellac test picture (with various colors of shellac on various woods). Here are my first two projects using shellac. The first picture is a mirror made out of Chokecherry. Chokecherry is a little darker and a lot denser than Cherry. The looks are very similar though. I put a coat of BLO slightly thinned with mineral spirits and wiped it off after 15 minutes. After giving it several days to dry, I put on 3 coats of 2# orange shellac. I smoothed it out using steel wool and mineral oil. This is a Walnut plant stand that is a Christmas gift for my mother-in-law. Same finishing schedule as above... I added a couple of coats of Waterlox just on the Top frame for water protection.
