Finishing Facts -
Poly. Varnish, Shellac

by Howard Acheson

Let's be clear.

  • Poly varnish can NOT be applied over shellac that contains wax.   Knowing that most shellac contains wax, poly manufacturers say not to apply over shellac.

  • Poly varnish can be applied over a dewaxed shellac.

  • Poly varnish can be applied over lacquer providing the lacquer is fully dry and has been scuff sanded for adhesion.

  • Regular varnish can be applied over shellac that contains wax.

  • Zinsser standard Bullseye shellac DOES contain wax.

  • Zinsser Spray Can shellac does NOT contain wax.

  • Zinsser Sealcoat is a shellac that does NOT contain wax.

  • Thanks to Jim Kull... one of the original developers of the wipe-on process.
